Agricultural Engineering started in 1905 by J. B. Davidson,a Mechanical Engineer at Iowa State University.Jay Brownlee (J.B.) Davidson is founder of ASABE and widely regarded as the father of agricultural engineering. It has been around for a while in the US and is an accepted licensed branch of engineering that is recognized by the engineering community. While it may be a minority - it does have its place and there are opportunities out there for Ag Engineers.

Since 1905, the Department of Agricultural Engineering, now the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, has been a leader in providing engineering solutions to agricultural problems in the United States and the world. The department’s original mission was to mechanize agriculture. That mission has evolved to encompass a global view of the entire food production system–the wise management of natural resources in the production, processing, storage, handling, and use of food fiber and other biological products.

 The meaning of water management is optimization of watering a crop as per it's requirement.In coming years we are going to face water stress in many parts of the world where as  to feed the growing population, cultivable land needs to be  increased along with water requirement for Agriculture. Therefore we are to control water while irrigating a crop. We should not allow water for deep percolation and drainage rather supply water up to root zone depth of a crop. We are to harvest each drop of rain water & prohibit it to drain to river & ocean. For example Rice consumes about 4,000 - 5,000 litres of water per kg of grain produced & It takes about  1500 litres  of water to produce 1 kilogram of wheat.
