Generally Agriculture Engineering colleges are under Agriculture Universities or ICAR. But IIT,Kharagpur was the exception where the department, the first of its kind in the country was set up in 1952 on the recommendation of the Dhar Committee appointed by the Board of Governors. As one of the larger departments of IIT Kharagpur, it covers a wide range of areas dealing with Post-Harvest Technology, Dairy and Food Engineering, Farm Machinery and Power Workshop, Aqua-Cultural Engineering. Sponsored research projects and development activities deal with Integrated Rainwater Management, Soil Tillage, Utilisation of Fly ash, Ergonomic Database for Agricultural Equipment, Integrating Remote Sensing Data with Distributed Hydrological Models, Model Pilot Plant for producing industrial enzymes etc. The department has filed several patent application based on its developmental work.

Mr. Binod Gupta graduated from IIT Kharagpur in 1967, and went to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln to complete his MS in Agricultural Engineering and a Masters degree in Business Administration in 1971.Binod Gupta is the Founder and Chairman of Info USA, Inc., headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, USA. It is a publicly held company (NASDAQ: IUSA) with more than $300 million in yearly revenue and 2,000 employees. Over three million customers use their proprietary databases and services for direct marketing, telemarketing, marketing planning, lead generation, sales planning, customer analysis and credit generation.Gupta was awarded three honorary doctorate degrees from the Monterey Institute, the University of Nebraska, and IIT Kharagpur. Gupta delivered the commencement address at IIT Kharagpur in 2006.




Binod Gupta, donated $2 million to his alma mater, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, to create the Vinod Gupta School of Management. The institute now offers an MBA program to engineering graduates with 0 to 5 years of work experience. After Gupta's contributions, IIT received an additional $2 million from other IIT alumni.Vinod Gupta school of Management, IIT Kharagpur is a public business school located in Kharagpur, India. An academic unit of Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, it is the first business school to be established in an Indian Institute of Technology on the donation of an Agricultural Engineer who is the alumnus of IIT,KGP.

It is surely a great honor for all CAETians that our CAETian Er Santosh Biswal completed his M.Tech from NIT Rourkela in 2015 in Water Resources Engineering with a final OGPA of 9.5 out of 10 competing with 21 Civil Engineers.He was awarded the institute branch topper medal in the convocation.In the photo he is receiving award from Mr Karan Grover in presence of Director,NIT in the middle.Now Er Santosh Biswal is continuing his Phd in NIT,Patna & here also in the first semester exam he is at the top position.He was the only regular Ag Engineer  along with 17 Civil Engineers in M.Tech program.On 15th August,in the Independence day,he has been confered topper award by the Director,NIT.

 The meaning of water management is optimization of watering a crop as per it's requirement.In coming years we are going to face water stress in many parts of the world where as  to feed the growing population, cultivable land needs to be  increased along with water requirement for Agriculture. Therefore we are to control water while irrigating a crop. We should not allow water for deep percolation and drainage rather supply water up to root zone depth of a crop. We are to harvest each drop of rain water & prohibit it to drain to river & ocean. For example Rice consumes about 4,000 - 5,000 litres of water per kg of grain produced & It takes about  1500 litres  of water to produce 1 kilogram of wheat.
