Organic Farming???

Image
Sikkim is the only state in India where there is 100% organic farming. Now many scientists, politician, statesmen advocate for organic farming as green revolution has made the environment toxic, the river/rivulet toxic, the atmosphere toxic &on the whole increase of cancer patients in rice producing states specially Punjab & Haryana. Now question is should India return back to the traditional farming system adopted before independence? Organic Farming is a controversial issue responsible for the present food crisis in Srilanka. Our forefathers were doing organic farming in India before 1964 that kept our country not self sufficient in food materials. We were begging Food to USA & were importing it under the Public Law(PL)-480 agreements since 1954.It is three Tamilians Sri M.S. Swaminathan, the then DG,ICAR,Sri B. Sivaraman, Agriculture Secretary & Sri C. Subramaniam, Agriculture Minister,GOI ( Referred as three S)who are responsible for bringing Green revolution in In...

Water Management

Image
The meaning of water management is optimization of watering a crop as per it's requirement. In coming years we are going to face water stress in many parts of the world where as  to feed the growing population, cultivable land needs to be  increased along with water requirement for Agriculture. Therefore we are to control water while irrigating a crop. We should not allow water for deep percolation and drainage rather supply water up to root zone depth of a crop. We are to harvest each drop of rain water & prohibit it to drain to river & ocean. For example Rice consumes about 4,000 - 5,000 litres of water per kg of grain produced & It takes about  1500 litres  of water to produce 1 kilogram of wheat. Rice is not a aquatic crop: it has great ability to tolerate submergence. By keeping two  inch standing  water in Rice field, we control weeds but cut off sunlight and aeration to the ground. An innovative method called the System of Rice ...

Agril Engineering in USA

Image
Agricultural Engineering started in 1905 by J. B. Davidson,a Mechanical Engineer at Iowa State University.Jay Brownlee (J.B.) Davidson is founder of ASABE and widely regarded as the father of agricultural engineering. It has been around for a while in the US and is an accepted licensed branch of engineering that is recognized by the engineering community. While it may be a minority - it does have its place and there are opportunities out there for Ag Engineers. Since 1905, the Department of Agricultural Engineering, now the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, has been a leader in providing engineering solutions to agricultural problems in the United States and the world. The department’s original mission was to mechanize agriculture. That mission has evolved to encompass a global view of the entire food production system–the wise management of natural resources in the production, processing, storage, handling, and use of food fiber and other biological produ...

Food Process Engineering Department in NIT,Rourkela Generally Agriculture Engineering colleges are under Agriculture Universities or ICAR. But IIT,Kharagpur was the exception where the department, the first of its kind in the country was set up in 1952 on the recommendation of the Dhar Committee appointed by the Board of Governors. As one of the larger departments of IIT Kharagpur, it covers a wide range of areas dealing with Post-Harvest Technology, Dairy and Food Engineering, Farm Machinery and Power Workshop, Aqua-Cultural Engineering. Sponsored research projects and development activities deal with Integrated Rainwater Management, Soil Tillage, Utilisation of Fly ash, Ergonomic Database for Agricultural Equipment, Integrating Remote Sensing Data with Distributed Hydrological Models, Model Pilot Plant for producing industrial enzymes etc. The department has filed several patent application based on its developmental work. Mr. Binod Gupta graduated from IIT Kharagpur in 1967, and wen...
