Organic Farming???

 Sikkim is the only state in India where there is 100% organic farming.Now many scientists, politician, statesmen advocate for organic farming as green revolution has made the environment toxic, the river/rivulet toxic,the atmosphere toxic &on the whole increase of cancer patients in rice producing states specially Punjab & Haryana.Now question is should India return back to the traditional farming system adopted before independence?


Organic Farming is a controversial issue responsible for the present food crisis in Srilanka. Our forefathers were doing organic farming in India before 1964 that kept our country not self sufficient in food materials.We were begging Food to USA & were importing it under the Public Law(PL)-480 agreements since 1954.It is three Tamilians Sri M.S. Swaminathan, the then DG,ICAR,Sri B. Sivaraman, Agriculture Secretary & Sri C. Subramaniam, Agriculture Minister,GOI ( Referred as three S)who are responsible for bringing Green revolution in India with the help of scientist Sri Norman Ernest Borlaug,an American Agronomist.Green Revolution showed a record production of wheat in 1972. The country, which had approached the U.S. literally with a “begging bowl” in the 1960s, declared unilaterally the termination of the PL-480 arrangement on December 31, 1971, on the ground that it had become self-sufficient in grain production. Norman Borlaug was awarded Nobel peace prize in 1970 & Padma Bibhusan in 2006 by Govt of India.Sri C Subramaniam was awarded Bharat Ratna, Indian's highest civilian award, in 1998, for his role in ushering Green Revolution.Dr Swaminathon received Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in 1961.Following this he has been conferred with the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, India's fourth, third, and second-highest civilian awards including the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1971.

We Agricultural Engineers were reading one subject -Soil Science & Fertilizer.The Professor/Soil Scientist in that subject has never taught us organic farming can make a country self sufficient in food grain production.I give below the package of practice of Paddy for one acre where requirements of chemical fertilizer(N+P+K) is within 50kg but Farm Yard Manure(FYM) is 5 cart load.Is it possible to supply this huge quantity of FYM taking in to consideration the cultivated area of Paddy in the country both in Kharif & Rabi even increasing the bovine population? Certainly No.So neither an Agriculturist nor an Agricultural Engineer should promote organic farming in India where most of the poor people do not get two meals a day & suffer from Malnutrition.As population of India going to cross that of China we should be ready to cultivate Genetic Modified(GM) seeds to quench the hunger of poor Indians as well as eradication of malnutrition from our country.

 The meaning of water management is optimization of watering a crop as per it's requirement.In coming years we are going to face water stress in many parts of the world where as  to feed the growing population, cultivable land needs to be  increased along with water requirement for Agriculture. Therefore we are to control water while irrigating a crop. We should not allow water for deep percolation and drainage rather supply water up to root zone depth of a crop. We are to harvest each drop of rain water & prohibit it to drain to river & ocean. For example Rice consumes about 4,000 - 5,000 litres of water per kg of grain produced & It takes about  1500 litres  of water to produce 1 kilogram of wheat.
